The Grand National Tour: Kendrick Lamar & SZA Hit Minneapolis
On April 19, 2025, Kendrick Lamar and SZA launched one of the most celebrated tours in hip-hop history at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. The Grand National Tour — named after Lamar's sixth studio album GNX and the legendary 1987 Buick Grand National Experimental — was a 47-show global stadium co-headline with SZA supporting her Lana deluxe release.
What Made This Show Legendary
The opening night set the tone: a 52-song, nearly 3-hour marathon across nine acts, alternating between both superstars. Lamar emerged from the iconic black GNX parked atop the stage — a direct callback to his Super Bowl LIX halftime show — and the crowd of 50,000 was electrified from the first note. Pyrotechnics, stylized court-deposition video interludes, and SZA's insect-metamorphosis butterfly arc gave the show cinematic scale. The Seattle stop later broke the all-time record for the highest-grossing hip-hop concert: $14.8 million from 60,941 tickets.
Fan Travel Guide: Minneapolis
Getting There: U.S. Bank Stadium is in downtown Minneapolis, served by the Metro Green Line (Government Plaza station) and multiple rideshare zones. Budget an extra 60–90 minutes on show nights for traffic.
Where to Stay: The Hewing Hotel, Loews Minneapolis, and Kimpton Grand are all within walking distance of the stadium. Book early — stadium-night rooms sell out weeks in advance.
Pre-Show Dining: The North Loop neighborhood is your best bet. Try Borough for upscale American or Smack Shack for legendary lobster rolls before the show.
Day-Of Tips: Arrive at least 2 hours early to hit DJ Mustard's opening set and explore the Not Beauty pop-up (SZA's beauty line, available exclusively on the tour). Gates open 90 minutes before showtime.
The Setlist Experience
Nine acts moved through GNX, DAMN., and TPAB classics from Lamar, and CTRL, SOS, and Lana cuts from SZA, with duo moments including "All the Stars," "luther," and "gloria" closing the show. Both artists performed almost entirely live — no heavy backing tracks, no auto-tune. Critics called it a masterclass in performance.
